Preordained success is a tricky thing. Anything less than perfect and your movie is considered a disappointment. Lucky for Summit Entertainment and the filmmakers behind New Moon, teenage girls have got their back. At this point only a natural catastrophe (and I’m not talking 2012) could derail the second installment of Twilight from being a major box-office hit. Movie websites are reporting record sales. Teenagers are already lined up for midnight showings. And there is a good possibility this film could gross in the $100 million range, putting it on par with such juggernauts as Iron Man, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter. Not bad for a $50 million movie about teenagers and vampires. But this is one crowded weekend at the box office — Hollywood wasn’t willing to let Summit have all the glory. Some crafty counter-programming includes kid flick Planet 51 and the Sandra Bullock football drama The Blind Side, which is appealing to male audiences. Read on for my predictions.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon: $105 million:

Yes, it’s a ridiculously high number and let me preface it with saying that even if New Moon grosses $85 million, it’s a hit. But the reason Twilight was such a phenomenon was because teenage girls saw the movie 6 and 7 times opening weekend. You don’t get that kind of repeat business at a free buffet. These people are obsessed. The only thing New Moon has going against it is its two-hour run time. And while Summit talked a good game about expanding the audience of the film to lure in boys, all Taylor Lautner’s abs have done is raise the screaming girl power in the theater. I’m doubtful boys are going to show up to watch him turn into a werewolf, despite the sequel’s improved special effects. For comparison, Twilight opened to $69.6 million on 3,419 theaters. The sequel is going to be in over 4,000 locations.

With “Twilight: New Moon” arriving in theaters this Friday November 20, buzz is sure to die down come the film’s release, but only for buzz for “Twilight: Eclipse to start heating up as it hits theaters June 2010. However, as you all may know, ‘Breaking Dawn’, the fourth installment in Summit Entertainment’s vampire saga, is still on the way thus it may be time to cast our gaze on it as well. Recently, Hollywood Crush asked star Taylor Lautner about the picture. “I’m looking forward to the whole pack splitting up, that could be cool,” the 17-year-old said, revealing which scene he is most excited to film for “Breaking Dawn.” Taylor wasn’t quite so sure, however, who should direct the last installment.

BEVERLY HILLS, California — If you’ve only seen the movie “Twilight” and plan to watch the sequel “New Moon” this weekend, you might get caught up in all the Team Edward vs. Team Jacob hype. If you haven’t read Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling novels, you might not know which monstrous young man ends up with Bella, and you might not know about some of the stranger elements of “Breaking Dawn.”

Taylor Lautner, however, has read the books. And with a “Breaking Dawn” movie as inevitable as death, taxes and “CSI” spin-offs, he’s a bit freaked out about what’s to come. As Taylor told us recently, he’ll have to work closely with the film’s director to handle the delicate material.

(Spoilers from “Breaking Dawn” are ahead!)

” ‘Breaking Dawn’ kind of came out of left field. It’s a very different movie,” Lautner grinned, remembering that he was a bit shocked last year when Meyer’s final novel was published.

In the book, Bella and Edward get married, go on their honeymoon and give birth to a vampire/human hybrid baby they name Renesmee. Having lost the battle for Bella, Lautner’s Jacob Black is present at the baby’s bloody birth — and almost immediately “imprints” on the newborn, essentially claiming her as his soul mate.

“It caught me by surprise when I read the book,” Lautner admitted. “I think I originally heard it happened through somebody who had already read it — and I didn’t believe it.

“Then I read the book, and I was like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me,’ ” he said. “Now that I’ve thought about it more and more, I understand it more and more. But still, in the back of my head, I’m like, ‘That’s a little odd.’ ”

Now, the biggest obstacle if there is a fourth “Twilight” film would seem to be figuring out a way Jacob could claim an infant child as his lover without seeming like some sort of borderline-pedophile weirdo. “It might be a little odd actually doing that,” Lautner admitted.

With a grin, Taylor jokingly imagined his scene. ” ‘Hey, Bella, your daughter? She’s smokin’!’ ” he laughed. “I don’t know [how I'm going to do that].”

But even though “New Moon” marks Taylor’s first performance as Jacob with the knowledge of how it all will eventually conclude, the actor insisted that he couldn’t let the Renesmee thing cloud his scenes romancing Bella. “I’ve tried to stay as focused as possible on the movie that we’re doing now,” he said. “My focus has just stopped with ‘Eclipse.’ ”

The first Twilight film turned tween girls into obsessives, so this sequel’s theme should make perfect sense: romantic and sexual OCD. When pallid, principled vampire Edward Cullen (Pattinson) reluctantly leaves town, chaste girlfriend Bella (Stewart) sulks and mourns for months. Then solace arrives in the bulging biceps of Jacob (Lautner), her Native American childhood friend turned hunky hulk.

It’s not exactly a celebration of female independence, but New Moon still has a handle on its young-adult audience: Hormonal frustration runs amok, and boys become attractive yet dangerous when they come of age (only the good ones keep their monsters in check). This time, we get not just vampires but werewolves, too—spectacular CG creatures that snarl and pounce before transforming back into buff, topless young studs.

Bella sees action too, when she develops a taste for adrenaline in the hope of catching a glimpse of her plasma-sucking protector. Motorbike rides and deathly dives follow, along with a scenic race to Italy to meet an übervampire (Michael Sheen). At one point, a character wearily deconstructs zombie-cinema symbolism while bemoaning the lack of hot guys. Is this sequel defending its fan base and preempting criticism about its transparent agenda? This is a soap opera, folks—and acceptable escapism for those old enough to see it yet still young enough to shriek at undead dreamboats.

The buzz is loud as “The Twilight Saga’s New Moon” is nearing its release date, but Miley Cyrus doesn’t catch the fever because unlike many other teens at her age, she isn’t into vampires. When asked recently during an interview with Cleveland radio station Q92 about the craze for the vampire film, she said she never watches the first installment “Twilight” and will never see the upcoming sequel.

“I’ve never seen it and nor will I ever,” she stated. “I don’t believe in it. I don’t like vampires. … I don’t like the wolf that pops out of the screen when I’m watching my TV at night. I don’t like it. I don’t want anything to do with it. I don’t like the shirts. I don’t like any of it.” Not being part of the “Twilight Saga” craze, Miley admitted “I feel really lame because everyone’s, like, so excited, I’m like, ‘Don’t even talk about it’.”

“The Twilight Saga’s New Moon”, which is set to be released in U.S. theaters this coming Friday, November 20, has had its Los Angeles premiere at Westwood Village in California on Monday, November 16. Leading stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner were some of the attendees who were seen hitting the red carpet of the star-studded event.

Yeah, okay Miley – usually I agree with you, but you bragging last month on how long you’ve known Taylor and how you support Twilight and apologizing to Rob and whatnot, make up your mind!

If the first instalment of The Twilight Saga was a celebration of teenage sulkiness, then this sequel positively drowns in it. As Bella, Kristen Stewart is pure ‘heroin chic’, though it isn’t drugs that means she’s looking so pale; it’s being dumped by her bloodsucking vampire soul-mate Edward (Robert Pattinson doing his James Dean impression) because he worries for her soul. Sigh… But it, like, totally sucks because he leaves town, which means all the girls who come to watch this movie hoping for two-plus hours of drool-worthy close-ups might feel, like, totally frustrated.

Taylor Lautner hogs most of the screen-time as rosy-cheeked Native American kid, Jacob. His feelings for Bella run deeper as their friendship becomes closer and even she starts to look at him in a different light; most notably when he whips off his shirt to reveal washboard abs. In the moonlight, he’s even more imposing and much, much hairier. He’s a werewolf but – yes, you guessed it – he’s a bit reluctant about the whole bloodthirsty killing part. Bizarrely though, it’s only when Jacob turns into a giant CG Lycanthrope that he becomes interesting. Unfortunately, Lautner has all the charisma of aforementioned washboard. No wonder Bella can’t get over Edward.

While all this is going on, we’re to assume that Edward is busy writhing in angst over his decision to leave Bella behind. Pattinson does at least get to do a bit of pouting on-camera when he finally remerges in the last act. Michael Sheen also pops up, quite Christopher Lee-like, as the camp vampire overlord who muses on the fate of the star-crossed lovers. But this denouement feels crudely tacked on. As before, the chemistry between Pattinson and Stewart helps to cover some of the cracks, but with the little amount of time they’re onscreen together, it’s like trying to patch up a flesh wound with Elastoplast. It also underlines the lack of a genuine rapport between Stewart and Lautner which bleeds the middle section of the film dry.

Stewart deserves credit for carrying the film on her shoulders and, once again, bringing plenty of soul to a character who might otherwise come across as self-indulgent. Lovelorn teenage girls will relate to scenes of her alone in her bedroom, glumly watching the seasons change to a soft-rock soundtrack. Director Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass) offers a few other evocative moments, like an underwater encounter between Bella and Edward which looks like it could’ve been inspired by an old Calvin Klein perfume ad. But the effect of that dreary dreamscape is always rudely broken by crass sexual overtones; Lautner and his pack mates run around the woods bare-chested in cut-off jeans, howling, like refugees from a ’90s boy band. Perhaps the noise is meant to distract us from what’s really going on. Which is nothing much really. 130 minutes of it too… A draining experience, but not in a good way.

Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner may be the big stars of New Moon, but it was a couple of hairy beasts who almost stole the spotlight at last night’s premiere party at L.A.’s Hammer Museum.

Outside of the Volturi-inspired bash, under a tent designed to look like a forest, were two—ready for this?—real-life timberwolves. They were kept at a safe distance from guests behind a fence.

Now, let’s get back to Rob and Kristen…

After the film received a standing ovation, Pattinson and Stewart headed to the party, but they didn’t enter through the front door. With fandemonium still going on in the streets, the two were said to have snuck in via an underground entrance.

Once inside, Pattinson was the center of attention, natch.

“Everyone surrounded Rob the entire night,” one party guest reports. “He was literally swarmed by fans, but he handled himself extremely well.”

Like he did this time last year at the Twilight party, Pattinson pretty much stayed at his table. He was all smiles as he signed autographs and took pics with who knows how many of the 2,200 people at the invite-only bash.

While Stewart looked pretty amazing on the red carpet in an Oscar de la Renta gown, she wasn’t having it at the party and changed into more casual comfy clothes. Don’t know about you, but we love her for that.

Unfortunately, Kellan Lutz had some probs getting into the bash because security apparently didn’t recognize him. Luckily, Lutz didn’t have to get all Emmett on them—he was allowed in after fans began chanting, “Let him in!”

In an ironic twist, Lutz plucked two fans from the crowd earlier in the evening and gave them tickets to the premiere.
