After screening Eclipse with Kristen Stewart at New York’s Crosby Hotel, Taylor Lautner and his costar headed over to Lucky Strike Lanes & Lounge for a late-night bowling game. Arriving just before midnight, the actors ventured up to the venue’s Luxe Lounge for a relaxed and friendly outing and, a source tells us, the group even scored a few strikes.

Visual-effects master Phil Tippett tells MTV News how he remade Jacob Black and the wolf pack into primordial animals for third installment. You’ve met Jacob Black and his pack of werewolves before, but you’ve never seen them like this. Fans were first introduced to the hirsute shape-shifters last November in “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” but when director David Slade took over directing duties from Chris Weitz on “Eclipse,” he brought with him a new vision for the wolves.

And it was up to visual-effects legend Phil Tippett — his studio engineered a dizzying array of hits, including “Cloverfield,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” and “Men in Black II” — to translate Slade’s vision into computer-generated effects worthy of the big screen. With just hours to go until the midnight opening of “Eclipse,” Tippett called MTV News and gave us a behind-the-scenes look at these cinematic wolves.

The Wolves Have New Fur, Eyes and Behavior
Weitz requested wolves that had more of a rangy look to them, with matted fur and eyes that more closely resembled human eyes than wolf ones. By contrast, Slade wanted his wolves just a bit more, well, coifed.

“They weren’t supposed to look like poodles, but [Slade] wanted them a lot sleeker looking and with shinier, shimmering coats,” Tippett explained.

Slade was also adamant that the “Eclipse” wolves revert to the wolf eyes you might see in nature. But it wasn’t just the wolf pack’s physical attributes that got a makeover for the third installment. Tippett and his team were also directed to adjust the wolves’ overall behavior.

“The ‘New Moon’ wolves, we played them as heroic sentries,” said Tippett. “When the wolves met the humans, we attempted to make it appear as though the wolves had a center of conscience that was definitely human. And David really wanted to play it that the wolves were far more primordial and much more wolflike. The wolves became less sentries sent from God and a lot more twitchy, uncertain, fairer animals.”

Perhaps the biggest similarity between both films’ wolves, however, is that neither set actually has genitals — a compromise necessary to secure a PG-13 rating. “We just deal with it by putting extra fur down there,” he laughed.

Taylor’s Wolf Is Sad
Tippett and his crew spent countless hours perfecting each member of the wolf pack, but obviously Taylor Lautner’s wolf receives the most screen time and thus required the closest attention. Specifically, they had to capture Jacob’s unrequited love for Bella while he was in wolf-form.

“Through non-language pantomime on the wolf’s part, he had to appear to be engaged and try to make his expressions telegraph the tragic love that is their relationship,” Tippett said. “So there is a sad kind of a longing and protectiveness that we try to imbue him with.”

To get the look right, crew members traveled up to a wolf preserve, and actually got into pens with the 200-pound animals and sketched out what they observed.

“I’m a huge advocate of that. Anytime you can get close to an animal, that’s the closet model you can find,” he said. “And the animators are cast just like actors. Certain animators are really strong on action and there are animators that are really strong on the emotional moments. And the animators strong on emotion were the ones creating the emotional response of Jacob’s wolf.”

The Vampires Fought With a Potato
Since the wolves are entirely CGI creations, the actors are presented with a challenge: how to interact with — and often fight hand-to-paw against — imaginary beings. What’s more, they had to do all this in such a way that would allow Tippett and his animators to plug in their digital creations. The solution they hit upon was what came to be known as the “potato.”

“We came up with this object that we called the potato,” Tippett said. “And the potato was roughly a very rudimentary wolf form that was kind of like a big pillow that matched the dimensions of the wolves without hair. And those would be set on location by the special-effects department, and they would rig these potatoes with wires so they would hang and we would be able to manipulate them in a way that we knew later on we would be able to match with the wolves in a realistic confrontation.”

Taylor Dressed Up in a Gray Leotard
Alas, the potato wouldn’t always suffice. For one scene in which Jacob’s wolf nuzzles up against Bella, filmmakers required something just a bit more lifelike than a big pillow.

“David was very insistent that Taylor actually perform with Kristen, and so he had the wardrobe department make up a gray leotard and a hoodie that Taylor wore, and he would kind of crouch down and try as best he could to fit that space where we knew later the wolf would be,” Tippett said. “And Taylor could remain in character and ensure that the performance was a performance based on contact between two performers, not just Kristen talking to a golf ball or something like that.”

Fantasy Trumped Physics
In the climatic fight scene, when the wolves take on a newborn army of vicious vampires, the effects team found itself in a conundrum: How could a 1,200-pound wolf and a 180-pound vampire get into a realistic fight?

“We have to be true to Earth’s specific gravity in the performance work to make it seem like the wolves are really there,” Tippett said. “But if a 1,200-pound object is slamming into a human being at 30 miles an hour, it’s going to have pretty severe consequences. And so there are these scenes where it’s like, ‘Oh my God, how are we going to pull this off?’ ”

Their solution was to sprinkle a hefty dose of magical realism into their physical calculations.

“David’s justification for it was, ‘OK, the newborns are made out of some material that increases their mass and that they are closer to 500 pounds,” Tippett said. “The actors didn’t actually play it like that — I don’t think they ever told them that because they didn’t start walking around like the Hulk or anything — but what it did is gave us an excuse to be able to choreograph these things. So when a wolf runs and attacks and slams into one of the newborns at the tail end of the third-act battle, we have a performance justification for how that works. That was actually planned out and made sense and didn’t look stupid.”

Don’t expect Taylor Lautner to follow in Zac Efron’s shoes and do a musical anytime soon. In fact, don’t expect it ever!

Taylor admits he’s a huge fan of musicals and is pretty much obsessed with American Idol, but his singing voice is so bad, he’d never be able to carry out a tune.

He tells WENN, “I can’t sing, which is the funny thing, so maybe that’s why I like watching it so much. I know there’s no way I can do that.

He jokingly added, “I think there is a statement in my contract promising there will be no musical numbers!”

Once “Eclipse” hits theaters at midnight, there will only be one book left in “The Twilight Saga” to mine for the big screen. But thanks to Summit Entertainment’s decision to split “Breaking Dawn” into two films, fans can look forward to two more installments of their beloved franchise.

It’s a decision that was universally embraced not just by fans of the series, but by several of the films’ stars as well — like Taylor Lautner, for instance.

“I definitely think it was the right thing to do, for the movie and for the book,” Lautner told MTV News of the “Breaking Dawn” split. “It’s hard enough to condense 500 pages into a script, but to condense 800 and everything that’s going on in ‘Breaking Dawn,’ it would have been impossible.”

Lautner will spend his summer shooting the lead role in the action/thriller “Abduction,” but he returns to the role of hunky werewolf Jacob Black when the cameras roll on “Breaking Dawn” in the fall. Already a veteran of the “Twilight” franchise, Lautner confessed that there are elements of “Breaking Dawn” that have him a bit on edge.

“It’s the part I’m most looking forward to and the part I’m most nervous about: Renesmee, the baby,” he said, referring to the vampire baby spawned by Edward and Bella. Upon Renesmee’s birth, Jacob finds himself inexplicably drawn to the baby, effectively ending his feud with Edward over Bella’s heart. “That should be very interesting to film. But I’m looking forward to it! I’ve got the direction of Bill Condon, so I’ll be fine.”

Speaking of Condon, Lautner said he’s already met the recently appointed “Breaking Dawn” director. “I met him briefly, very quickly, but not about ‘Breaking Dawn.’ He seems like a very nice guy,” the actor said. “Obviously, he’s ridiculously talented, so I’m excited that I’m getting to work with him twice.”

As the shoot date on “Breaking Dawn” draws ever nearer, there are fewer and fewer questions about the film left to answer. One question that lingers, however, is whether it will be released in 3-D.

“Usually, 3-D is best when it takes you into another world,” he explained. “I could see it going both ways. As long as we have the story line down and as long as we bring what was written on the pages in the book to life, then we’ll be fine no matter what we do.”

Cole Haddon: So in your opinion, what’s different about Eclipse compared to the first two movies?

Taylor Lautner: I was actually bummed. There’s a lot more action in this picture, but, for me specifically, I’m a wolf when there’s any action going on. So I was bummed I wasn’t involved in too much action. I got to kiss Bella for the first time, so that was probably the biggest thing.

CH: Jacob definitely seems to have matured in Eclipse. But how much of that is his character, and how much is it you, coming into your own as an actor, showing up on the screen?

TL: No, I don’t know if it really has anything to do with me. It’s kind of all in the books and that’s what we go off of. That’s exactly what the fans want to see. But yeah, Jacob definitely matures quite a bit because he’s been dealing with his new self now. He’s come to know his new self and the situations he’s been put in romantic-wise. He deals with a lot. He becomes frustrated in this one a little bit because he gets this close all the time, and gets told no over and over again. So it’s quite a bummer, but he’s quite persistent.

CH: You worked a lot more closely with Robert Pattinson this time around.

TL: Yeah, that’s right. I had a scene or two in New Moon where I was able to work with Rob, and I was really excited to work with him for Eclipse quite a bit. The hardest thing I found about working with him is that usually I have to hate him in the scenes, and it’s difficult. He’s such a funny, nice guy. Literally we’ll be doing a scene where we’re yelling and screaming at each other, and he’s slapping my shoulder, and I’m shoving him off me, and we’re screaming and spitting in each other’s faces — and then, as soon as they call cut, we bust out laughing. It is really hard to be mean to Rob, definitely.

CH: The best line in the movie is also its most self-aware, when Edward asks Bella if Jacob owns a shirt since your character is always running around topless and ripped. Was that in the script, or improv?

TL: I believe it was actually in the book, but it was definitely in the script. When I read that for the first time, I couldn’t wait for Rob to deliver that. It was funny. It was quite obvious when they pull up in the middle of the street, even in the position I’m in. I’m leaning back up against the car with my hands behind me. It looks like I’m waiting, flexing for her as she comes up. Those are the awkward scenes. When everybody is fully clothed, it’s raining and I’m just the only person there waiting, kind of posing for them.

CH: It’s been announced that Breaking Down, the fourth book in the Twilight series, will be broken into two movies and Bill Condon (Gods and Monsters, Dreamgirls) will be directing it. What are your thoughts on the breakdown, and have you spoken with Condon yet?

TL: I have only met Bill once, and then only very briefly, so we have not had time to discuss it. He seems like a very nice guy, and obviously he’s extremely talented. I think whatever comes our way he’s going to deal with it fine. I’m looking forward to talking to him for sure.

CH: And the movie being broken up into two?

TL: I think that was definitely the right thing to do. It’s hard enough to break down 500-plus pages into a 110-, 120-page script, but this one is 800 pages, and there’s just so much going on with the wolf pack and the baby. There’s a lot of stuff, so to condense that into one film would probably be a challenge. I’m very excited that it’s two. Looking forward to it.

CH: What are your thoughts on keeping Breaking Dawn faithful to the book?

TL: It’s definitely super important to us to remain as faithful as possible to the books because that’s exactly what the fans want to see — they want to see the books. There may have to be a few changes here and there, but as long as we maintain the basic story and everything the characters go through, all those emotions, we’re going to be fine. I think whatever Bill Condon does is going to turn out amazing. I definitely trust in him, and I think the fans should as well.

CH: Curious: Have you had much feedback from Native Americans about the wolf pack?

TL: I haven’t heard too much feedback from them, but two years ago, maybe even longer — back when we filmed Twilight — I met with some real Quileutes. I kind of just wanted to get to know them before we started filming. I went there with a pad and paper and a pencil. I was thinking I was going to have to write down notes and transform myself into this different person. I was like, “What do you guys like to do in your free time?” And I was expecting some different answer, and they were like, “We go to the beach and we play basketball, but most of all we like to check out girls.” I was like, “Oh really? Alright.” It would definitely be interesting to hear feedback after the movies have come out.

CH: So you’re Hollywood’s new “it” guy. You’re attached to a flurry of projects and your quota has skyrocketed. What’s it been like from your point of view?

TL: I don’t know about that, but it’s exciting. This franchise has been such an incredible platform. It’s amazing. I’m so thankful for this franchise and the opportunity. I’ve had the time of my life these last two years, and I’m just so thankful to be in this position now. I’m having fun making movies. It’s great. I’ve met a lot of cool new people, and had the opportunity to work with a lot of new talented people, and amazing is the best word for it.

CH: So how do you choose your projects now?

TL: It’s kind of a gut instinct. It’s whatever I’d want to watch. You read a lot of scripts, and whenever you can finish one, you really love it. It’s all based on story and the character. I want to challenge myself to do many different things. I definitely don’t want to stay on one road, so I try to change it up.

CH: And you’re playing your first superhero next, right? Stretch Armstrong?

TL: Not next, but hopefully soon. Next is Abduction. I’ll just be a regular guy who is in an interesting situation, but maybe a superhero about a year from now.

CH: Any sense yet of how Armstrong will be executed?

TL: You know, they’re doing all of the designing and all that stuff right now. They’re writing the script and everything, so I haven’t seen any finalized version.

CH: Do you know what the character’s backstory is going to be? It’s not a well-known character anymore, I think.

TL: No. They’re not finished with the script yet. I think they should be shortly, so hopefully we’ll know soon. The cool thing with the toy is that there is no story. Like with a superhero you have to stay along these lines, but with a toy you get to create everything, which is super exciting and creative.

CH: Final question: Why should people want to see this movie [Eclipse], including those who haven’t seen the previous two?

TL: If you like the first and second movie, then you are definitely going to like this movie. If you haven’t seen the first or second movies, you’re still going to like it. It basically takes everything — the romance, the action, the suspense, the danger — everything in the first two movies, and times it by five in this one. It’s by far my favorite movie. It’s exciting. It’s very dangerous. They’re at war the entire time, but you still have that romance and it’s elevated because this is the height of the triangle. Edward and Jacob are forced to team up together and protect Bella from [the vampires] Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard) and Riley (Xavier Samuel) who are after her. [Laughs]. All that was a very long way of telling you: you should see the movie.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Taylor Lautner was looking sharp in a handsome suit on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” black carpet in Los Angeles on Thursday night, but on Friday he planned to cut loose.

“You’re done with ‘Twilight’ after tonight [for a bit]. What’s the first thing you’re gonna do tomorrow morning?” Access Hollywood’s Shaun Robinson asked Taylor on his way into the film.

“Tomorrow morning, I am gonna relax for a day,” Taylor said. “I’m gonna do nothing.” In the coming days, however, the 18-year-old said he has some quality plans in mind – spending time with his loved ones.

“I have family in town I’m gonna spend time with them. And then the next day I’m gonna go to New York,” he said.

New York though, will only be a brief stop.

“Then I go to Pittsburgh – to begin filming ‘Abduction!’” Taylor said of the thriller he will star in, playing a teenager who finds out he was kidnapped as a youngster, prompting the discovery of a major conspiracy that sends him on the run.

KRISTEN Stewart headbutted Taylor Lautner while filming a scene for Twilight: Eclipse – but it was an accident!

The script called for Lautner to grab Stewart from behind as she ran up a stairway, then quickly pull her toward him.

But just as the buffed up 18-year-old turned Kristen around, she accidentally slipped -– and her head banged down hard on his nose.

Instantly, blood gushed from Taylor’s nose as the director — fearing it was broken — called a halt to filming, according to American tabloid the National Enquirer.

Ice packs were ordered immediately, and the on-set medic quickly checked for damage. Taylor’s nose wasn’t broken; just badly bruised.
