You don’t need her new alter ego Jane Timoney of “Prime Suspect” to detect the coolness of actress Maria Bello.

Ask the 45-year-old who takes over the Helen Mirren role this fall what she’s doing to prepare for her new high-def TV life and she laughs.

“I don’t do anything to look good,” Bello insists. “I hate exercise. I smoke a gazillion cigarettes a day. I drink wine and coffee.

“I like aging,” she says. “I like a few wrinkles.”

Here’s the ultimate wrinkle: Besides her new TV series, Bello has never been busier. She also stars in the summer film “Beautiful Boy” and plays Taylor Lautner’s mom in the upcoming “Abduction.”

“Beautiful Boy” is a love story with a twist. She plays half of a married couple (with Michael Sheen) on the rocks when they face the ultimate heartbreak: Their only son commits a mass shooting at his university and then takes his own life.

What follows is a nightmare unfolding including a funeral, media onslaught, and questions, accusations and pity from friends and relatives.

The tragedy tests a relationship that’s already hanging by a thread, and the couple must come to grips that they truly only have each other.

Bello says the piece was an actor’s dream, because she was able to play guilt, rage, blame, self-discovery and finally hope.

“I have such compassion for those parents. I can’t even imagine what they go through,” she says. “They’re dealing with the loss of their children to either death or jail and must deal with the media blaming them. It’s truly being sent to hell.”

The film also forced her to deal with her own motherhood issues.

“I always say the day I had my son was the best and worst day of my life,” she says. “I knew that I would love this little person more than I ever loved anyone in my life. At the same time, I knew right there that I couldn’t keep him from learning all of life’s lessons.

“Even now when I raise my voice, I question myself as a parent.”

Then again, it doesn’t hurt when your mom stars as a tough lady on TV in the new “Prime Suspect.”

Bello says she didn’t worry about filling the British Mirren’s celebrated shoes when it came to this iconic role.

“I think we’re different-sized shoes,” Bello says. “The new series is set in New York City. It’s very American. The tone has a real sense of humor. I don’t think there will be comparisons.

“As for Helen, oh God, I love her. She was so iconic in the English version,” she says. “What I loved and still love about this character is she’s a fully fleshed-out woman who is struggling with sexism while balancing work and a home life. She has vulnerability, strength and power.

“The script for the new series is so well written,” she adds. “All of it is really on the page. Then it became about me creating my own version.”

Bello is happy to star on the small screen.

“They’re calling TV the new independent film,” she says. “Oftentimes in indie films, you find the best woman characters — unlike big blockbusters.

“Frankly, I think the film industry should be embarrassed,” she adds. “I went to a huge movie last week. The girls in it were very pretty and very sexy, but they were basically these shells. That bores me. I search for women characters that are powerful and knowing.”

Bello says she strives to be that woman in real life.

“I love that my role in ‘Prime Suspect’ is a woman who is strong. She has to navigate a man’s world and fight for respect,” she says. “I know the feeling. It’s like a man doing business the other day who called me honey. I couldn’t even believe it.”

Later this year, she stars in John Singleton’s “Abduction” opposite “Twilight” hunk Lautner.

“My 17-year-old niece was with me when I found out I was doing the role. I said, ‘I’m playing the mother of some ‘Twilight’ kid. His name is Taylor.

“She screamed, ‘Oh my God’ and burst out crying.”

Bello laughs, “Every day it was 300 screaming fans outside the set. I never want that kind of fame.”

UPDATE! Taylor Lautner’s rep insists he does not want to play Channing Tatum’s stripper past, nor was he ever interested in the part, despite reliable Steven Soderbergh sources who insist otherwise.

——

Here’s a casting shocker: Wannabe action star Taylor Lautner moonlights as a wannabe stripper!

A source close to Steven Soderbergh’s flick about Channing Tatum’s pre-fame stripping days spilled to us that the Twilight hunk was dying to land the lead role in the take-it-off movie. What better way to show off his werewolf abs, right?

So how, did Alex Pettyfer end up nabbing the part opposite cougarific Demi Moore?
Play Lawrence is “First Class” All the Way
Play Premiere: “Midnight in Paris”
Play “Hangover” Stars Spill on Sequel

He worked for the money! But ya know, minus the g-string.

“Taylor wanted the role really badly,” a source close to project (which is still being written) dishes to us. “Alex was also pursuing it super hard.”

Great! Except there was a problem: the folks who were considering hiring the outspoken Pettyer had heard he, “could be an asshole,” so they were reluctant, at first.

Guess those too-chatty interviews and sleazy tattoos aren’t helping his rep. But like any bad boy worth his marbles, Alex didn’t give up.

“He flew himself to New Orleans where Channing is filming 21 Jump Street and blew him away,” our source explains. “He met with Channing and Steven, and they felt he was the perfect guy to fill [Channing's] shoes.”

Or thong, as it were.

Steven was still apprehensive, so he phoned up some references from one of A.P.’s previous flicks, Beastly, and heard that—surprise again!—the dude was actually down to Earth on set.

Good thing they didn’t ring up Dianna Agron for a recommendation!

Man, maybe this more reformed Alex we’re hearing about lately possibly could be a genuine side to the baddie Brit?

“Steven is all about being real and he sees that in Alex,” our spy says. “Plus, the role is kind of punky, so his badass side will serve that.”

So who would you prefer to see shaking their toosh for singles? Must say, we’re still laughing thinking about Taylor begging to get his striptease on—especially since another source who’s working on the project says he’ll be shocked if “they don’t get into the gay stuff.”

We totally called this. Which is why we’re shocked Tay would want to get involved. Wouldn’t that totally switch his tough-guy ego?

Eh, maybe not. Nothing like good old friendly stripper competition to make you smile!

Taylor Swift has had her share of high-profile romances, and judging by some of her song lyrics, not all of them ended well.

But when asked about having been attracted to a bad boy or two, the singer and actress – who has been linked to Jake Gyllenhaal, John Mayer and Taylor Lautner – defends her choices, saying in the June issue of InStyle, “Well, they start out nice!”

The experience of having past relationships end hasn’t soured Swift, 21, on the idea of love and romance. In fact, she says she’s open to a relationship as long as it feels right.

“There are no rules when it comes to love,” says the Grammy winner. “I just try to let love surprise me because you never know who you’re going to fall in love with. You never know who’s going to come into your life – and for me, when I picture the person I want to end up with, I don’t think about what their career is, or what they look like. I picture the feeling I get when I’m with them.”

And whether or not she has disappointments on the romance front, she says that she’ll always write in her own ending – in song.

“I’m really a daydreamer and a hopeful person,” she says. “When it comes to ‘happily ever after,’ I always have a tendency to write a happy ending to my songs. That’s probably wishful thinking on my part.”

Rob Lowe recently found himself at an American football game with Taylor Lautner, the 19-year-old star of the Twilight films.

Both actors are fans of the Indianapolis Colts and were invited by the Colts’ owner, Jim Irsay, to attend one of the play-offs.

Sitting together in an open box, with a group of people, they soon found themselves surrounded by a mob of teenage girls. ‘They were coming up to the box and literally staring at him,’ Lowe recalls. ‘Some were screaming. Others took his picture. Others were like this…’

Lowe gets up, walks over and plants his face a few inches from mine, his fists clenched, his eyes boring into me, like a Maori doing the Haka.

‘It was all I could bear to watch,’ he says, retaking his seat. ‘It actually made me really emotional, seeing him struggle with it. He’s such a lovely kid, he’s even younger than I was. It has nothing to do with you. Every generation there’s That Guy. And sometimes there’s three in a generation, or four, but somebody’s got to be That Guy. I was That Guy.’
