After more than three years of playing werewolf Jacob Black in highly successful “The Twilight Saga,” is hunky star Taylor Lautner ready to embrace his inner Mark Wahlberg and turn into a high-speed, action hero? Lautner, 19, will certainly try to make “Twilight” fans forget about Jacob in his new thriller flick “Abduction,” which premiered in Hollywood last night (Sept. 15). However, it was pretty hard to ignore the hundreds of screaming girls anxiously stood along the red carpet at the star-studded premiere. There were cries of joy, excited squealing — and even a few tears. After the recent release of the coveted “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1″ trailer, these Twihards were pretty pumped. And although Lautner welcomed their support, the teen idol — and martial artist — seemed pretty confident that they’d enjoy his new leading man stature. As for shedding his teen wolf fur? Lautner’s not worried about finding new, interesting roles to challenge himself as a young actor. “My dream is to continue to challenge myself in a wide variety for roles and genres,” he told The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet premiere of “Abduction.” “That’s why I love this so much. It’s different than anything I’ve ever done before and next I look forward to doing something different as well.” The film also stars Danny Glover, Sigourney Weaver, Alfred Molina, Michael Nyqvist, Maria Bello, and Jason Isaacs. “Abduction” will open nation-wide on Sept. 23. Taylor Lautner has been spotted in the company of director Gus Van Sant a number of times in the past few weeks. What’s that all about? Is there a film deal in works here? According to a report from Hollywood Life, Gus Van Sant–director of the new film Restless and also of the 2008 award-winning film Milk–is well aware that he’s been seen all around Hollywood with the Twilight star, and he’s willing to dish on why. “There’s a film that he wanted to put together, but I’m not working on it … yet. It’s possible I may work on it,” Van Sant says of Taylor Lautner and his film idea. Van Sant did take the opportunity to plug Restless while chatting about Taylor Lautner. And who can blame him? The subject of Lautner ensures a positively attentive audience, you know. “I hope [filmgoers] get into the love story,” Gus says of Restless. “And they feel like they want to fall in love.” So now back to Taylor Lautner. He’s already starring in Abduction, and will be once again thrust into the limelight as Jacob Black when Breaking Dawn Part 1, the latest in the Twilight films which premieres in November. Exactly what kind of film idea has he been pitching to Gus Van Sant? Unfortunately Gus stayed mum on the specifics, however film buffs can only imagine the caliber of a movie starring Taylor Lautner and directed by Gus Van Sant. It seems film buffs and Lautner fans have only one thing they can do in their efforts to find out. They can wait–at least until a bit more info is leaked! (Not what you wanted to hear, for sure–but it’s really the only option for right now!) SOURCE: Hollywood Life |

As a film critic, I’m not supposed to want to see this one. I’m supposed to recoil in horror and the genuinely bad acting on display in the two trailers from lead Taylor Lautner. I’m supposed to roll my eyes at the apparent cynicism that comes with giving this untested (as in ‘open it yourself’) actor several action franchises on the strength of a supporting role in a popular series. After all, I’ve complained about the same circumstances in regards to Jeremy Renner. But come what may, the film itself looks like a glorious throwback to the trashy, borderline exploitative cheese ball action thrillers that went away at the beginning of the last decade. And I do miss this stuff with a passion. If someone other than Lautner were in the lead (or if the previews made it apparent that Lautner gave a better performance), I’d be rather jazzed to see it. Without a lead actor I can endorse, it’s still probably going to be worth seeing. Even if we omit Lautner from the cast list, we still have a film that features (roll call…) Alfred Molina, Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Maria Bello, and Michael Nyqvist (the jury is still out on Lily Collins as the token love-interest/probable third-act hostage). So we’ve got an all-star cast of character actors and B-level stars, just like the Paramount stuff from the 1990s. Plus, we’ve got one of the best action directors alive. John Singleton may be hit-and-miss in terms of the overall quality of his films, but he is one of the best American action directors currently working today. The second-act shootout in Four Brothers was the best modern-day shootout of the last decade. The second act running gun battle in Shaft was pretty high on the list as well. And while it may be the silliest and most disposable of the franchise (though not the worst per-se), 2 Fast 2 Furious has some of the most impressive car chases and stunts this side of Fast Five. We can argue that it’s unfortunate that he no longer makes socially-relevant dramas about race and class, but his skills as an action director put him on a very short list alongside (or perhaps just below) James Cameron, Martin Campbell, Peter Jackson, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, and John Woo. So at the very least we’ll be getting some high-quality action set-pieces from someone who knows how its done. SOURCE: Hollywood News |
