Just last week we marveled at the sheer number of projects “Twilight” star Taylor Lautner had in development, and perhaps he was starting to feel the pressure too. After dropping out of “Northern Lights” earlier this week, the 18-year-old has parted ways with another project, “Max Steel,” based on the Mattel toy, reports New York magazine’s Vulture blog.
Sources say it was his “Stretch Armstrong” collaboration with rival toy company Hasbro that was the impetus for Taylor’s departure. According to Vulture, Taylor realized Hasbro was doing a better job with its movie properties than Mattel. To wit, the toy company has leveraged board games Candy Land, Battleship and Risk into high-profile projects and had earlier success with a couple small flicks called “G.I. Joe” and “Transformers.” Added one source, “When you sign up to make a movie with Hasbro, you know it will be in theaters a year later.”
Less of Taylor Lautner is never a good thing, but we can’t say we’re too sad to see “Max Steel” go. While the toy is wildly popular internationally, it doesn’t seem to have much name recognition here in the U.S. Though we will mourn those could-have-been shirtless scenes. Sigh.

So to recap, Taylor’s current project list is comprised of “Cancun,” “Abduction” and “Stretch Armstrong.” And “Breaking Dawn” if Summit ever gets around to it. Still a lot for the rising actor, but a more manageable list, for sure.

Taylor Lautner’s werewolf is pretty tough, but the Twilight star’s likely next role is a guy who can really take care of himself. Paramount confirms that Lautner, 17, is attached to bring to life Max Steel, an animated superhero and action figure from Mattel.

Lautner, who already bears a strong resemblance to the CGI version of Max, was very taken with the character, who gets his powers from – well, it’s complicated (something about being infected with microscopic “nano-machines” and drinking “T-juice.”)

Although Lautner is “committed to the role,” a source tells PEOPLE, the movie still has no director and no timeline, but as a high-priority project, look for it to be getting underway quickly.

Taylor Lautner is toying with a Mattel property for an upcoming project.

The “New Moon” star has signed on to star in “Max Steel,” which centers on a 19-year-old extreme sports junkie recruited by a secret agency after an accident infects his body with nanobots, making him superhuman.

Paramount is hoping to score another toy-based hit in the same vein that Hasbro’s Transformers has successfully made the leap to the bigscreen.

The Mattel action figure, which was introduced in the U.S. in 1999, spawned an animated series that ran from 2000-2002. The property is particularly popular in Latin America, where Max Steel is the region’s best-selling action figure.

There is no director attached to “Max Steel,” which is the sixth property that Mattel has set up in the past year. Chad Damiani and JP Lavin are writing.

Lautner, a relative newcomer who has a mere four films to his credit including the two “Twilight” films, will next be seen in New Line’s “Valentine’s Day.”

After playing a werewolf in “Twilight” film series, Taylor Lautner will be seen as a superhero in his next movie. Following report that the 17-year-old heartthrob was in talks to join “Max Steel”, Paramount Picture has confirmed to Deadline that they have hired him to play the lead role.

Lautner will take the role of Josh McGrath, a 19-year-old extreme-sports junkie who, in the original animated TV series, is told being accidentally exposed to the unleashed power of nanotechological machines, which become part of him and give him increased strength, near-invulnerability and the ability to change his appearance. He later takes on the identity of Max Steel and fights against superpowered villains.

Chad Damiani and JP Lavin are on board to write the script. However, there is no director attached to this movie adaptation of Mattel action figure. Produced by Joe Roth alongside Barry Waldo and Tim Kilpin, action adventure film “Max Steel” eyes a 2012 release schedule.

As for Taylor Lautner, before widely known for his role of Jacob Black in vampire drama film “Twilight”, he has appeared in “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D” and “Cheaper by the Dozen 2″. He will next be seen starring in comedy romance “Valentine’s Day”, which will hit U.S. theaters on February 12, 2010.

——

In the minds of his older female Twilight fans, Taylor Lautner is already something of a toy boy. But he could be a literal toy if Paramount decides to cast him in its Max Steel film.

Nothing is anywhere close to official yet, so take this with the requisite pinch of rumour salt (it tastes like broken dreams, in case you were wondering), but the LA Times reports that the studio is considering him as teenage hero Max.

The Mattel toy line arrived in shops back in 1999 and featured an extreme sports athlete named Josh McGrath who is inadvertently exposed to nanobots. They give him super-strength, near-invulnerability and the power to change his appearance at will.

JP Lavin and Chad Damiani are penning the script, so the movie itself has only just started trundling through the halls of development hell. But you can see why Paramount would want the New Moon co-star – with luck, he is can attract his sizable female following and tie it to the Transformers action crowd. Let’s just hope he keeps his shirt on a bit more if he takes the job…
