“Northern Lights” Lautner Role Given to Hemsworth

No, Twi-fans, we are not talking about Lautner leaving Twilight or anything to do with our favorite vampire-movie franchise.

Instead, a well-placed source confirms The Last Song star and real-life Miley Cyrus boyfriend has been offered a role Lautner was originally supposed to play…

Lautner, 18, was to be paid $7.5 million to costar in David Ellison’s Northern Lights, but he dropped out shortly after snagging the role, according to industry blog Deadline Hollywood.

Fast-forward to today. Hemsworth, 20, is now in the running for the job. (We love us some Liam, but we doubt he’ll be getting as big a paycheck as Lautner.)

“The offer is true, but who knows if he’ll do it,” a source close to Hemsworth tells me. The movie is about four extreme-flying pilots. It was reportedly supposed to start shooting on April 1.

Hemsworth is about to take off for a European tour to promote The Last Song. He’s also signed on to star in 3-D action flick Arabian Nights.

Is “Northern Lights” Back On? Principal Photography Information…

After wrapping “The Twilight Saga’s Eclipse”, Taylor Lautner is expected to kick off the principal photography of “Northern Lights (2010)” in early June, so Before the Trailer reported. To support the shooting of the film which will be another starring vehicle for the 18-year-old star, a production office has been opened in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

In the same month, Lautner will be likely busy promoting “Eclipse” which is set to be unleashed in the U.S. on June 30. It is not known whether the actor will join the production as soon as it begins or he will come to the set later when he has completed the promotional duty for the third installment of “Twilight” film series.

Set against the backdrop of extreme flying, “Northern Lights” tells a story of four young pilots who compete against the world’s best. Tom Cruise was rumored to join the project, but in the end the actor is not among the cast members.

Beside Lautner, Paramount Pictures has not announced who will play other major characters as the other pilots. John Moore, the man behind “Max Payne”, is slated to direct the action adventure movie, which is penned by Chuck Russell, David Ellison as well as Duane Adler.

EXCLUSIVE: I’ve learned that after 5 PM today, bidders will be told who won that Taylor Lautner-attached script Abducted which the new motion picture lit agency Verve sent out for its client Shawn Christensen. (At one point, Lionsgate had an exclusive negotiating window but couldn’t agree on terms.) Meanwhile, there’s a lot more Lautner news. He and Skydance’s flyboy movie Northern Lights have “respectfully parted ways over casting issues”, sources tell me, noting, “Taylor’s people want to step up and put the best actors and directors around him.” (I hear the Northern Lights project will continue to move forward without Lautner…) Now 5 more movies have been offered to the Twilight Saga’s 18-year-old co-star, including 2 for that open April slot. As for that new salary high of $7.5 million Skydance had offered him for Northern Lights, I’ve learned that Universal paid him that sum to play the title role in Stretch Armstrong. It’s good to be Taylor right now. (And let me talk you off the ledge if you’re not.)

Remember, shooting for this film is in Louisiana in April. The tentative date for release is 2011. So excited I think he’ll do great! What do you think?

Tom Cruise NOT In “Northern Lights” but Taylor IS?

Contrary to reports stating otherwise, Tom Cruise will not be costarring in the forthcoming Taylor Lautner action flick Northern Lights. Though the idea of Cruise playing the controlling billionaire father of a young aerobatics pilot (Lautner) does sound pretty great, a rep for David Ellison’s Skydance Productions tells EW that character does not exist and that Cruise is not attached to the project in any way. The official logline: “Set against the backdrop of extreme flying, Northern Lights follows four young pilots as they compete against the world’s best. A story of teamwork, sacrifice, loss, and victory, these young aviators push themselves to physical and emotional limits in the unforgiving world of performance aerobatics.”

The film — which, to be fair, does sound a bit like Top Gun with a need for speed and [insert imaginary word that means flips but rhymes] — will be directed by John Moore (Max Payne, Flight of the Phoenix, Behind Enemy Lines). Production begins this April in Louisiana.

I, for one, am loving this. When I think of hot young pilots, I think of leather jackets, and Lautner, who will be 18 when he gets his wings, happens to look great in those. We also know that Taylor — who was a four-time world champion of extreme martial arts by age 11, and is the reigning Late Night motorccyle racing champ — isn’t afraid to push it. If action movies are what he wants to do, let him. The Twilight Saga will continue to show his softer side; pics like Northern Lights could even out his fan base.

I’ve just learned that Taylor Lautner is now being paid per ab. That’s right, the 17-year-old co-star of the Twilight Saga franchise who’s famous for his buff physique that is making girls scream when he takes off his shirt in New Moon, is getting $7.5 million for his next pic. It’s called Northern Lights, a Tom Cruise vehicle to be directed by John Moore (Max Payne) with a start date of April 1st. The logline says the pic is about “a gifted, young, aerobatics pilot who faces off with his controlling, billionaire father and falls in love with a gifted, female pilot). It’s being made by David Ellison’s new company Skydance Productions, and Paramount has a first look at his development. That shitload of money negotiated by WME now makes Taylor Lautner into the highest paid Hollywood teenage actor around. (I’m told that neither Zac Efron nor Miley Cyrus have ever gotten a salary even close to that for their films. Amazing!) So the question is whether Paramount, which is in the Taylor Lautner business in a big way with the recently announced Max Steel, will pony up an even huger salary for the teen who’ll be starring as the title lead in their own upcoming blockbuster.

I guess we believe Taylor Lautner as an angsty teen werewolf, so why not buy him as both Tom Cruise’s
kid and a pilot. Lautner is apparently about to get paid a massive $7.5 million to take a role in Northern Lights, a movie that will star Lautner as an “aerobatics pilot who faces off with his controlling, billionaire father and falls in love with a gifted female pilot.” Given that Cruise will likely be playing the father, we can either think of this as a very depressing Top Gun sequel or simply a nod at self-parody.

According to Deadline Hollywood, production will get started on April 1 with Max Payne director John Moore on board. Now I have nothing particularly against John Moore, but I suffered mightily through Max Payne, and won’t forget it soon. Of course he also made the flight-centric Flight of the Phoenix, so he’s at least got some propeller experience.

The biggest news about this is Lautner’s gigantic payday, and the sense that he’s already of leading man caliber to star alongside Cruise. Given that Lautner hasn’t carried a single movie without the word Twilight in the title, that’s a pretty significant gamble. Robert Pattinson’s projects beyond Twilight haven’t really gone anywhere, though granted, he hasn’t been groomed as a new star by a studio in the same way. But can the Twilight effect carry on without Bella lurking somewhere in the frame?
